Cherry Blossoms, is there anything more lovely than these little beauties? Every Spring I become this anxiety ridden mess of a human being because I make it my mission to capture these gorgeous pink trees in full bloom. They only bloom for a few days and if you don’t time it right, you’ll miss them! Or worse, the petals will be sparse and destitute. I must have driven past this spot on 7 different occasions before I was finally ready to shoot. Mother nature pulled a little trick on me this year and moved spring back a full month! lol For the shoot, I was going for an organic look and feel. I wanted magic hour sunlight, beauty shot portraits and movement in the hair and clothing. I also wanted to play with the depth of field between the branches. I love it when a few elements of the shot are out of focus! We used the Canon 50mm for most of the shoot. All of the photos were taken at f/1.8 or f/2.8 to give it that soft/delicate look that I find so pleasing to the eye. For the edit, I used the “Frosting” Lightroom Preset from The Wedding Collection. I also used my Brushes from The Brush Collection to clean up any spots that needed some extra attention. I love the way that this preset gives you that warm and inviting look. I created a Behind The Scenes Edit Video below to show you what the “Frosting” Lightroom Preset looks like in action. I also added a few quick video clips from the shoot to give you a more well-rounded experience. Happy editing everyone!

Ok, this might be my new favorite shoot! These photos were taken at Sugar Beach, a small man-made beach in the heart of Toronto’s waterfront area. The location gives you the illusion that you’re somewhere in the Caribbean, and you’ve just stepped out of your private cabana to take a stroll on the sandy white beach. The reality is that you haven’t even left the city and you are a mere 10 mins away from the chaos that is downtown Toronto! But, let’s pretend that we really are somewhere tropical for the sake of the shoot. I don’t know about you, but I could really go for some sunny island vibes right about now. When you think about it, photography really is all about creating an illusion. It’s about using your camera to capture reality in an artistic way and then editing and enhancing it to fit with what you envisioned in your head! Editing is the final step in the process of bringing your creative concept into fruition. For this shoot, I was definitely leaning towards a breezy pastel concept. I wanted soft blue skies, flowy clothing, and tassels of hair blowing in the wind. I was going for a relaxed, but chic look with lots of different angles and detail shots. We used a Canon 5D MkII camera with a 50mm and a 24-105mm lens. For this particular edit, I used the “Girl Crush” Lightroom Preset from The Blogger Collection. It gives you that matte film look while balancing out any harsh shadows and highlights in your shot. I also used the brush tool to pull down some of the additional highlights. (Looking for more presets & brushes? Take a little detour and check out The Complete Collection!) Now it’s time to get comfortable, grab a cherry cola and enjoy all of those beautiful pink umbrellas and blue skies! Don’t forget to watch the video below to see the photos transform right in front of your eyes in Lightroom! Happy editing everyone!

Toronto is a city that I hold near and dear to my heart! It’s always been an exciting international location, but in the last 5-10 years, it’s really started to shine as a city with a vibrant progressive culture and modern architecture. The waterfront area is the best place to catch a shot of the city skyline. (Side note – It’s even more beautiful at night, but I digress.) The skyline is predominantly comprised of blues, grays, blacks & whites thanks to all of the modern glass buildings and condos that have been sprouting like wildflowers recently. The water adds an additional hit of blue and makes for an exceptionally cohesive backdrop for photos. We arrived in this spot early enough to have it all to ourselves on this sunny April morning. These photos were shot on a Canon 5D MkII camera with a 50mm and a 24-105mm lens. For the edit, I wanted to exclusively use brushes from The Brush Collection. Sometimes you just want a subtle splash of editing here and there and that’s where this collection can really shine. I used some of my basic brushes – (Brighten 2 & Soften 2) to get that soft blue sky look. Then I used some of my makeup brushes (Teeth Whiten 1, Lips & Pink, Skin Smooth 1) to edit my complexion. I also used some of my other basic brushes (Enhance & Sharpen 2) on the title photo and the portrait oriented skyline shot below to get that crisp/defined look in the buildings. The result is a natural looking edit with subtle enhancements that compliment the original untouched shots. Looking for more presets? The Complete Collection has got you covered with hundreds of chic looks to play with, including the brushes that I mentioned! If you ever find yourself in Toronto, take a trip down to the waterfront and grab some shots, you won’t regret it. Happy Editing!

Desert Day Dream | Chic Lightroom Presets

When we decided to travel to the Nevada desert, I’ll admit, I had no idea what I was in for. I’ve seen all of the classic old western movies and I’ve admired it from afar through starlet infused pop music videos, but until I saw the desert in person, I didn’t fully appreciate it’s sheer beauty! While driving back to Arizona, we dipped into Utah to do some exploring. We happened upon this small empty parking lot on the side of the highway and decided to stop to stretch our legs. The parking lot housed a small sign that read: “Toadstool Trail.” We immediately looked at each other and proclaimed in unison, “Jackpot!” This was one of the places that we wanted to photograph but had decided against it in order to focus on more well-known locations. How perfect was it that we just happened to stop there out of the blue? I immediately started hunting for an outfit in my suitcase to change into (I don’t usually hike in an outfit like this one, but I’ll do anything to bring you guys a great shot!) As we set out on the trail I found so many amazing things to photograph; plants, tumbleweeds, mountains, and toadstool rock formations! It was a photography gold mine! I knew that I would be launching a collection of Lightroom Light Leaks soon and I realized that this was the perfect opportunity to show them off. So without further ado, enjoy a little desert sunshine with the help of my beautiful Lightroom Light Leaks! Love the look? Take a little detour to the shop for more before and after photos from The Light Leak Collection!  Don’t forget to check out my behind the scenes video where you can watch me edit these shots in real time.

Today, I’m taking you somewhere over the rainbow! These photos were taken at Colette Grand Café in Toronto, Canada. This gorgeous Parisian inspired café is the perfect place for colorful blog photos. First, let me tell you a little bit about this shoot. I’ve admired this café for a long time and I’ve always wanted to take photos there. The interior is adorned with colorful furnishings, beautiful white marble tables, and excellent lighting for photography! What more could you want from a photo shoot location? We arrived bright and early on a Sunday morning. (Photography quick tip: Sunday morning is usually the best time to take photos. The streets are bare and the restaurants/cafés are empty. The earlier you arrive at your location the better!) I ordered a number of desserts from the bakery, including their famous macarons and raspberry cake. We also ordered two cappuccinos, which were artfully prepared for us by the barista. Soft french music played in the background and served as a charming soundtrack to our visit. Every detail of the experience felt like absolute luxury! As I arranged my shots, it was “trés difficile” to stop myself from devouring my beautiful subject matter before we were finished with the shoot. We held off just long enough to produce these lovely images for you to view today. I used the: Perfection Preset from The Wedding Collection to edit my RAW photos. It boosts your shots in one simple click! I added a VIDEO below to show you just how quick and easy the editing process really is. Check out the video and come back to see me soon for your next Free Lightroom Preset!

If you’ve spent even the smallest amount of time in Paris, you know that patissiers are a common sight in the city. You don’t have to walk very far before you come across a beautiful window display filled with all sorts of tantalizing sweets and treats. It’s one of the reasons why I fall deeper and deeper in love with the city every time I visit. On this particular trip, we decided to have tea and macarons at the lovely Ladurée Tea Salon. When you arrive on the corner of Champs Élysees and Rue Lincoln, you’re met with the beautiful green metal work that you see in the photos and a row of windows filled with the most elegant boxes that you’ve ever laid eyes on! Every inch of the exterior calls to you and invites you in for what is sure to be the best dining experience in Paris. When you set foot inside, your eyes are instantly drawn to the row of macarons, tarts and pastries that are available for take away. We eyed up a few macaron flavors and decided to head upstairs to the sitting rooms. It’s hard not to appreciate the way the salon is designed. Each dining room is themed with its own color palette and furniture inspired by the late 1800’s. We chose the room that featured the signature Ladurée green. We ordered the Marie Antionette tea and selected: Rose Petal, Salted Caramel, Pistachio, Vanilla, Lemon and Chocolate for our macarons. I don’t think that I’ll be able to describe the experience of devouring those little beauties, but I will tell you this: Lovely Ladurée does not disappoint! I highly recommend that you treat yourself to an afternoon of tea the next time you are in Paris.

GET THE LOOK: I used the “Plush” Lightroom Preset from The Portrait Collection to get the subtle blue split toning that you see in all of the photos. Before and after shot below. Looking for more Presets? Check out The Complete Collection.

Switzerland…is there anywhere more majestic? After spending a few days in Lauterbrunnen, I’m officially convinced that I’ve found heaven on earth! We arrived by train on a misty afternoon. At first, all I could see from the window was the fog that danced around the mountain tops and settled gently over the valleys and rivers below. As we got closer to our destination, the fog started to clear and this peaceful little town came into view. The train let out a loud whistle (old school style lol) and I smiled as the sound echoed across the valley floor. We had never seen anything like Lauterbrunnen, and we instantly knew that we were in for a memorable trip…

We stayed at a Swiss Hotel in town that had a gorgeous view of Staubbach Falls. The valley is amazingly home to 72 waterfalls in total. We spent our days discovering nearby Swiss towns like Murren and Grindelwald, hiking the Jungfrau ice fields and indulging in more Alp Cheese (exclusive to the area) and Swiss chocolate than a girl could ever hope for! One day we ventured out to the edge of the town where we found a flock of sheep grazing in the grass. I’m an animal fanatic so I became fast friends with the youngest in the herd. She was a friendly little thing, who I promptly nicknamed: “Daisy.” In Switzerland, all the sheep are adorned with bells so farmers can easily find them if they stray. Well…when they run together, the bells become a symphony of beautiful sounds. Picture dozens of wind chimes blowing together in the breeze…That’s exactly how I remember the bells! It was something magical that I won’t soon forget. On our second day in the Alps, we found this meadow, which quickly became my favorite spot to sit back and dream. We would visit this spot two more times before our departure to take pictures and relax while surrounded by the tall grass and wildflowers. When winter arrives, I know that the memory of this meadow and the sound of the bells will provide me with endless amounts warmth and inspiration…

Fun fact: Lauterbrunnen is rumored to be the place that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to create Rivendell for The Lords of The Rings novels. He traveled to Switzerland many times in his youth and was known to hike in the area. For all you non-Middle-Earth fans, Rivendell is a magical kingdom in the books where the elves live and one of the most beloved cities in the story. It’s hard not to be inspired by this beautiful place…looking back at these photos makes me realize just how picture perfect it really was. For my editing process, I used the “White Rose” Preset from The Wedding Collection along with makeup brushes and paint brushes from The Brush Collection. If you’re interested in more Lightroom Presets, you can check out my larger package: The Complete Collection, with hundreds of chic looks to play with. Well, Switzerland is definitely a place that you must see at least once. There are hundreds of photo opportunities and hidden gems for you to capture along the way. Afternoon in Amsterdam

Amsterdam (9 of 10)

It’s 9:00 am on a cool summer morning in Amsterdam. We wake up in our rented flat, which is located in the attic of an old historic canal house. We take our time getting ready and marvel at the low beams and 18th-century Dutch architecture above us. At about half past twelve, we grab our cameras and step out onto the streets for an afternoon filled with bicycles and bridges! Amsterdam is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. In fact, thinking back on the time that we spent there, I realize that the city seemed to have two very distinct personalities. On one hand, there is the charming, proper side of the city. The people are friendly, the shops/restaurants are quaint and the homes along the canals are absolutely beautiful!  On the other, there is this new-age, free-spirited vibe that is always present. Sort of a rock and roll…anything goes philosophy that makes you want to grab your sunglasses and join in on the fun…

Afternoon in Amsterdam

Afternoon in Amsterdam

We spend our afternoon walking the brick laid canals and biking the busy streets that are filled with cars, motorcycles, Vespas and pedestrians alike. We were lucky enough to have a friend of a friend take us to some hidden gems in the city. We indulged in traditional food, cheese & drink and fully immerse ourselves in our surroundings…

When it came time to edit my shots from Amsterdam, I knew that I would have to give them a bit of a boost in Lightroom. The afternoon was pretty overcast, which made the RAW files a bit cold and lifeless. Well…Chic Presets to the rescue! lol I used the “Riverside” Preset from The Portrait Collection to amp up the color and balance out the dull shadows. In the end, I was happy with the way the photos were a bit more rock and roll than my usual light and airy shots. Sometimes trying something new can be more exciting! Looking for more Presets? Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

It’s 8:00 am on the second day of our Venice vacation. We’re staying at a questionable, but cozy Air B&B flat just steps away from the glorious Grand Canal. The air is heavy and full of moisture as we descend the stairs from our flat on the second floor to the main lobby. Venice has a distinctive dampness about it, similar to what it’s like in the first hour after it rains. Except in Venice, it seems like the streets never fully dry. I didn’t know it at the time, but we would soon find out exactly why the city was filled with so much moss and moisture! (more on that below…) We slowly pushed open the heavy front door and were met with the most magnificent Venetian sunshine we had seen yet! It was the perfect morning for photography…

Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

We set out into the city in search of architecture and beautiful scenes to bring back for the blog. Venice is one of those places where you don’t have to look too hard to find the magic. It’s all around you! We quickly discovered the day before that the city is a never ending maze of tight alleyways and dead ends. Just when you think you’ve found your way, you take too many lefts and end up lost. On our second day, we decided to just go with it, having found confidence in the chaos of getting lost the day before and finding our way back despite it. The Grand Canal was like our anchor in the city. As long as we knew what direction it was in, we could travel back along it to find our flat. Which came in handy many times during our stay. After capturing the shots that you see here and spending the day exploring, we were in desperate need of hydration. Which naturally came in the form of buying a bottle of red wine and bringing it back to our flat with a few slices of take away pizza…when in Rome…I mean Venice! lol We were devouring our meal at the kitchen table when all of a sudden I heard this frightening…gut wrenching siren ring out across the city…

Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

I kid you not when I tell you that this loud repeating siren had me so startled that I was flashing back to World War II movies that I’d seen as a child. “What does this mean? What does this mean?” I kept saying over and over again. All I can say is…thank God for wifi! We looked up the sirens on the internet and found out that they were warning us that the city would be flooding that night. Flooding? We had heard about St. Mark’s Square flooding on the internet and decided that it wasn’t going to be a big deal. After all, we were 15 minutes away from that part of the city. Little did we know that it wasn’t only St. Mark’s Square that would flood… After some playing around on the computer, we decided to get back out there. We set out to find Ponte Dell’ Accademia, an impressive wooden bridge with a gorgeous view of the water. When we turned the corner, we were met with rapidly rising water in the street…like…Titanic style! Two men rushed over to us and tried to sell us plastic knee-high boots for 10 Euros each. “No thank you,” we told them, deciding that we would just find another way around. As we searched from alleyway to alleyway, we realized that the water was coming from all directions and there was no other way around. We went back to the men with our tails between our legs and bought the boots lol…
Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

We walked into the calf high water and started sloshing around. To our absolute surprise, the water didn’t seem to phase the locals at all. They happily moved through it without a care in the world. As we walked a little further, we noticed that the first floor of all the shops and hotels were also completely flooded, with people going about their business in the water like it was nothing out of the ordinary. We came to this expensive looking restaurant, only to find the diners sitting with their feet completely submerged and the waiter bringing them wine and taking orders! It felt like the Twilight Zone! We were relieved to see that other tourists also thought that this behavior was rather strange. We had a good laugh with just about everyone who spoke English along the way. I met so many people that night from all over the world. It was really neat how this odd event seemed to bring everyone together…

I used Lightroom Presets from The Wedding Collection to edit my shots. Venice and sunny locations in general, can give you extreme highlights and shadows in your photos. Many of the presets in The Wedding Collection are built to correct this unfortunate reality. I used the “I do” Preset and layered over one of my Finishing Presets called “Subtle” to give me that perfectly balanced look. Before and After Below. Looking for more Presets? Check out The Complete Collection with over 345 unique looks to discover. Well… we ended up finding our bridge that night and making it back to the flat in one soggy piece. It’s funny how the most miserable moments of a trip often make the best stories. Don’t forget to come see me later this week for my next Free Lightroom Preset post…until then…sweet dreams until sun beams find you!
